Advancement Speed
Rulebook
The game assumes standard advancement (1,000 XP to level up). You can vary this to change the pace of your campaign.
Fast advancement (800 XP) works best for short campaigns where you want to accomplish a lot quickly. Slow advancement (1,200 XP) suits gritty campaigns where all progress is hard-won. You can switch between speeds from one adventure to the next.
Story-Based Leveling
If you don’t want to track XP, have characters level up at story-appropriate moments. Generally, characters should gain a level every 3–4 game sessions, after a major event like defeating a significant villain or achieving a key goal.
| Speed | XP to Level |
|---|---|
| Fast | 800 |
| Standard | 1,000 |
| Slow | 1,200 |
GM Core p.57. Story-based leveling: level up every 3–4 sessions at a narrative milestone instead of tracking XP.
