Afflictions

Rulebook

Afflictions include poisons, diseases, and curses. They progress through stages based on failed saving throws.

How Afflictions Work

When exposed to an affliction, you attempt a saving throw against its DC. On success (or critical success), you fight it off. On failure, the affliction takes hold.

Onset: Some afflictions have an onset period. You don’t suffer effects until the onset time elapses, then you attempt your first save.

Stages: Afflictions have numbered stages with escalating effects. After each interval (listed in the affliction), you attempt another saving throw.

Critical Success Reduce the stage by 2 (if at stage 1, you recover).

Success Reduce the stage by 1 (if at stage 1, you recover).

Failure Increase the stage by 1.

Critical Failure Increase the stage by 2.

If the stage would exceed the maximum, you remain at the maximum stage. If you reduce to below stage 1, you recover from the affliction entirely.

Virulent Afflictions

Virulent afflictions are harder to overcome. You must succeed at two consecutive saves to reduce the stage by 1. A critical success counts as two successes.
