Line of Sight & Effect

Rulebook

Line of Sight

You have line of sight to a target if you can draw an unblocked line from your space to the target’s space. Transparent materials (glass, force walls) allow line of sight but may block line of effect.

Line of Effect

You have line of effect to a target if you can draw a line from your space to the target’s space without being completely blocked by a physical barrier (walls, solid objects). You need line of effect to target a creature with most spells and abilities.

Key Distinctions

  • Line of sight: can you see the target? (Blocked by opaque barriers)
  • Line of effect: can your attack/spell physically reach the target? (Blocked by solid barriers)
  • A window gives line of sight but blocks line of effect
  • A force wall typically gives both line of sight and line of effect to spells but blocks physical attacks
  • Total cover (no line of effect at all) means you can’t target the creature
