Stealth & Detection

Rulebook

Creatures exist in one of four detection states relative to each other. These states determine what you can perceive and target.

Observed

You know exactly where the creature is. You can target it normally. This is the default state in most encounters.

Hidden

You know what space the creature is in, but you can’t see it. It’s concealed from you, so you must attempt a DC 11 flat check when targeting it. If you fail, the attack doesn’t affect the creature.

Undetected

You don’t know what space the creature occupies. You must pick a space to target and attempt a DC 11 flat check — if you pick the wrong space, you miss automatically. Even if you pick the right space, you still might miss due to the flat check.

Unnoticed

You have no idea the creature is even present. You can’t target it at all. This is the state before combat begins if a creature is stealthing.

Transitions

  • Seek (1 action, concentrate): Attempt Perception vs. the creature’s Stealth DC. Success makes a hidden creature observed, or an undetected creature hidden.
  • Hide (1 action, secret): Attempt Stealth vs. observers’ Perception DC. Success makes you hidden from those creatures.
  • Sneak (1 action, move, secret): Stride up to half your Speed while attempting Stealth. On success, you remain hidden/undetected. On failure, you become observed.
  • Creating a Diversion (1 action): Attempt Deception vs. Perception DC. On success, you become hidden.
