Frequently Asked Questions

How does PF2e encounter XP calculation work?

PF2e uses a flat XP system based on creature level relative to party level. Each creature contributes a fixed amount of XP (e.g., a creature at party level is 40 XP). The total maps to difficulty thresholds: Trivial (40), Low (60), Moderate (80), Severe (120), and Extreme (160) for a party of 4.

Does it adjust for party size?

Yes. XP thresholds automatically adjust based on your party size using the official adjustment values from GM Core. A party of 5 has higher thresholds than a party of 3.

Can I include hazards in encounters?

Yes. Hazards are included alongside creatures and contribute to the XP budget following official PF2e rules. Both simple and complex hazards are supported.

Can I view full creature stat blocks?

Yes. Click any creature to view its complete stat block including HP, AC, saves, speeds, attacks, and special abilities. You can also copy the stat block as markdown.

What is a moderate encounter in PF2e?

A moderate encounter costs 80 XP for a party of 4. It's a decent challenge where the party uses some resources but isn't in serious danger. Most encounters in a session should be moderate or lower.

How many creatures should I put in an encounter?

It depends on creature level relative to party level. A single creature at party level +2 makes a moderate encounter. Two at party level also work. The encounter builder calculates this automatically as you add creatures.

How much XP is a creature worth?

XP is based on creature level relative to party level. A creature at party level is 40 XP, one below is 30 XP, one above is 60 XP, two above is 80 XP. The builder handles this for every creature you add.

What is the difference between severe and extreme encounters?

Severe (120 XP) is a major challenge that drains significant resources and may knock out party members. Extreme (160 XP) is life-or-death and could result in a TPK. GM Core recommends extreme encounters be rare and dramatic.

How do I run a boss fight in PF2e?

A classic boss fight uses a single creature 3-4 levels above the party (severe to extreme). You can also pair a creature 2 levels above with a few lower-level minions. The builder lets you experiment and instantly see the difficulty.
